Do convertible car seats work for toddlers?

Choosing a car seat for your child can be very challenging. Basically, there are three types of car seats available for kids- Infant Car Seats, Convertible Car Seats and 3-in 1 Car Seats. Infant car seats are specially designed for babies who fall in the category of 0 to 12 months of age. They can be lifted off their base and can be carried around.

On the other hand, a convertible car seat can be converted into different set ups. It can turn into a rear-facing seat or a backward-leaning seat and forward-facing seat. The rear-facing and backward leaning set-ups are best for infants as they keep them secured. While the front-facing set up proves very useful for seating toddlers and larger kids.

3-in-1 car seats have three set-ups. All of them are forward-facing positions, one with inserts, one without inserts and the third with the back removed. The first is for infants, second for kids bigger than infants and the third one can be used simply as a booster seat. These seats are not at all suitable for infants as there is no rear-facing option.

Which one should you choose?

Among the three types, infant seats are best-suited for infants. On the other hand, convertible car seats are preferred and recommended toddlers. While infants just sit or sleep in the position you put them, toddlers tend to move around a lot. A convertible seat gives them space and freedom to move without getting hurt. Rear-facing is recommended for a child until the age of 2 so even if you go for this position initially, you can get the position changed as your kid grows up.
